Aayakar Seva Kendras (ASK) - New Taxpayer Centres Coming Up!

  • The Income Tax Department has announced that it will bring up new ASKs (Aayakar Seva Kendra) soon in its endeavor to improve its services. ASKs were introduced by the tax department with the aim to make its services more accessible to common people. Now tax department will add 60 more centres to in several third tier cities like Goalpara, Morigaon, Siliguri, Haldia, Dharmapuri, Hardoi, Neemuch, Mandsar, Rewari, Sonepat, etc. covering areas from Assam to Madhya Pradesh. More than 300 ASKs are already operational in many prominent cities out of which 58 were added last year by the government.
  • CBDT has taken up the task of creating new ASKs on priority. CBDT has also asked the field offices of the tax department to create teams to undertake the task and speed up the process. This step will make common tax related services more accessible to the people. For those of you who do not know about ASK, here is a brief description about it:

What is an Aayakar Seva Kendras or ASK?

  • ASK represents a new integrated problem solving approach of the Income Tax Department in the realm of citizen-centric service delivery.
    • It is a one stop shop for taxpayers where they can request for services including grievances redressal.
    • It is guided by Sevottam, a service quality management framework for government organizations.

Services offered by ASK:

    • One of the most important function of ASK is to assist in filing Income Tax Return.
  • All ASK centres have at least one stand-alone dedicated PC with internet connection. This facility can make all the services provided through e-portal of tax department available to the visiting taxpayers. They may include:
    (a) PAN enquiry &, (b) Viewing of 26AS
    • Downloading of circulars and latest press releases for information of tax payers
    • Jurisdiction related enquiries
    • Checking refund status for e filed returns
    • A list containing names and contact numbers of all TRPs in an ASK centre are prominently displayed for use of Taxpayers.
    • One can obtain a new PAN/TAN from an ASK. These facilitation centres have a dedicated desk for receiving PAN/TAN applications through representatives of NSDL / UTIISL.
    • The ASK centres are equipped to receive RTI applications related to taxpayer services.
